Job Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and driven Controller to join our team. The Controller is a key financial
leader responsible for managing accounting operations, financial reporting, project costing, cash
flow management, and compliance. This key person will work closely with the Director of Finance,
Project Managers, Department Managers to ensure financial stability, profitability and regulatory
compliance in a highly dynamic and project-driven industry.
Key Roles and Duties
1. Financial Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Support leadership of the company to enhance the growth
and profitability. - Assist the Director of Finance in making long-term financial and
investment decisions. - Act as a key liaison between finance, project management, and
department teams.
2. Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement
preparation. - Ensure compliance with GAAP, IFRS, and construction-specific accounting standards (e.g., percentage of
completion accounting). - Prepare Work in Progress (WIP) reports and analyze project
performance. - Support internal and external audits, ensuring accurate
documentation. - Ensure compliance with tax regulations (sales tax, payroll tax, corporate
tax, fuel tax). - Prepare reports for bonding companies, banks, and regulatory
agencies.
3. Construction Accounting & Job Costing
- Maintain job cost accounting systems to track labor, materials, equipment, and
subcontractor costs. - Ensure proper cost coding and allocation for each
project. - Oversee change order tracking and financial impact analysis.
- Work closely with project managers to monitor project budgets and control overruns.
- Ensure accurate cost-to-complete projections for project
4. Budgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow Management
- Develop and manage company-wide and project-specific budgets.
- Prepare financial forecasts to anticipate cash flow needs and resource allocation.
- Work with project teams to ensure cost control and budget adherence.
- Monitor cash flow to ensure the company has the necessary working capital to meet obligations.
- Manage retention payments, progress billings, and collection cycles.
5. Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable Oversight
- Ensure timely and accurate processing of subcontractor and vendor payments.
- Monitor lien compliance and subcontractor insurance tracking.
- Oversee progress billing, retention tracking, and collections.
6. Payroll & Certified Payroll Compliance
- Oversee multi-state payroll processing for union and non-union
employees. - Ensure compliance with prevailing wage laws, sign-off on payroll reporting, and union agreements.
- Monitor payroll tax filings, worker’s compensation, and benefits administration.
7. Internal Controls & Risk Management
- Implement and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard company
assets. - Ensure contract compliance with government and private contracts.
- Work with legal and operations teams to assess financial risks in contracts and subcontracts.
8. Financial Systems & Process Improvement
- Oversee and improve construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, CMiC, Procore).I
- Identify automation opportunities to enhance accounting efficiency.
- Optimize financial workflows to reduce manual processing errors.
- Train and develop finance and accounting teams on best financial practices.
9. Leadership & Team Management
- Lead and mentor the accounting and finance team, including assistant controllers, accountants, payroll staff, and clerks.
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and estimators to provide financial guidance.
- Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, and efficiency within the finance department.
Key Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
✔️ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Construction Management.
✔️ 5+ years of accounting/finance experience, in Civil construction or Manufacturing
✔️ CPA, CMA, preferred.
✔️ Strong experience in job costing, WIP reporting, and progress billing.
Technical Skills
✔️ Expertise in construction accounting software (e.g., Viewpoint Vista, Sage 300 CRE, CMiC, Procore
✔️ Advanced Excel skills and proficiency in financial modeling.
✔️ Strong understanding of bonding, insurance, and construction contract compliance.
Soft Skills
✔️ Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
✔️ Excellent communication skills for interacting with executives, project managers, and stakeholders.
✔️ Ability to work in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
