Art Gallery of Ontario - February 2008
Project Manager for Ellis Don led us on a tour of the  renovations of the Art Gallery of Ontario designed by world renowned Frank Gehry.  His remarkable design is one of the outstanding additions to Toronto’s burgeoning architectural renaissance in the early 21st century.  For more information visit www.ago.net. 

The Nuts and Bolts of CAWIC - January 2008
This informal networking event was intended to provide new and returning members with insight into the workings of the organization.  Members were introduced to each of CAWIC’s Committee Chairs and invited to volunteer on committees of their choice.  For more information visit www.cawic.ca.

Holiday Dinner and Charity Auction - December 2007

Employee Fraud – Keeping the “F” Word off your Construction Site -  November 2007

Denise Bambrough and Sharon Vogel of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP hosted an informative evening.  CAWIC members learned about some of the common employee fraud schemes to which the construction industry is susceptible and what organization can do to prevent identify fraud, as well as some of the strategies which exist for recovering losses incurred as a result of fraud.  For more information visit www.blgconstructionlaw.com

ROM Tour – Michael Lee-Chin Crystal - October 2007
The Crystal, the new addition to the Royal Ontario Museum by Daniel Libeskind, Liebeskind, one of Toronto’s most talked about new works of architecture.  CAWIC members learned how the new construction was married with the existing historical buildings.  For more information visit www.rom.on.ca.

CAWIC Golf Classic - October 2007
The second annual CAWIC Golf Day proved even more successful than the first.  Kleinburg Golf Club was the perfect venue for a relaxed day of golf and fun.  Proceeds from a raffle benefited Habitat for Humanity Women Build.  For more information visit www.torontohabitat.on.ca.

The Global Group Tour - September 2007
Lucy Hart and Vicki Woloschuk of the Global Group led  a tour of the Global Showroom. They introduced  new products that Global has developed to meet ergonomic and accessibility issues within the office work environment.  For more information visit www.globalgroup.com.

VIP Gala - June 2007

A special VIP Gala was and fund raiser was held at The Albany Club in Toronto in support of CAWIC’s bursary fund. Hazel McCallion, Mayor of Mississauga, the key-note speaker.  She spoke of her successful leadership in one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada.  Two additional presentations were:  Promoting Sustainable Construction Worldwide by Tareq Ali and The Pink Nail Project by Justyna Werbel.  For more information visit www.holcimawards.org .

St. Gabriel’s Parish Tour - May 2007
Celebrated as North America’s greenest worship space, the church for St. Gabriel’s Passionist Parish has been awarded LEED® Canada-NC 1.0 Gold Rating.  Designed by Larkin Architect Limited, St. Gabriel’s is the first worship space in North America to achieve such a distinction.  It has also been awarded a 2007 City of Toronto Green Award for Green Design andwas and was featured in Doors Open Toronto in 2007.   For more information visit www.stgabrielsparish.com and www.larkinarchitect.com

Bonds & Sureties - April 2007

Annual General Meeting - March 2007
The CAWIC Board of Directors hosted the first Annual General Meeting of Women in Construction as a Canadian Organization.  CAWIC's By-Law No. 1 was approved and a new Board of Directors was elected. It was a great opportunity for our membership to network and get to know one another.

Positive Networking - February 2007
Susan Richardson of Leadership that Matters facilitated one of CAWIC's most successful events. ABCs of Sustainable Design – Building Blocks Homes - January 2007
Sustainable design is one of the biggest topics in the construction industry today.  Building Blocks Homes was the winner of the Archetype For A Sustainable House national design competition. Developed by Anne Stevens (FORT Architect Inc.), Terrell Wong (Stone’s Throw Design) and Celia Iori (Iori Architect Inc.), Building Blocks Homes breaks homes down into modules (A to Z) and home owners pick and choose which modules they would like.  For more information visit www.buildingblockshomes.ca.

The Basics of Electrical Work - October 2006
Cheryl Carbis, an Electrical Inspector with the Electrical Safety Authority and a CAWIC member, led an interesting presentation on the basics of electrical work.  She discussed the Canadian Safety Association (CSA) and its importance,as well as the Underwriters Laboratories.  For more information visit www.csa.ca.

Putting the “U” Back in Colour:  A Personal Talk About Interior Colour - September 2006
Sylvia O’Brien of Colour Theory and a CAWIC member, made an interesting and interactive presentation on colour. She talked about industry trends and to make colour choices. National Ballet School Tour - August 2006
Designed by KPMB Architects, the new National Ballet School in Toronto is an architectural gem.  Natalie Stasko, a project manager at the school, provided a tour of the school’s Jarvis St. campus which consists of restored historical buildings as well as a new structure clad in glass which provides passers-by on the street a glimpse into the dance studios of the school.  For more information visit www.nbs-enb.ca.
